Protein Powders — Separating Fact from Fiction
A recent study found that some popular protein powders had serious deficiencies.

Many athletes spend money on protein powders looking for increases in lean muscle mass and to improve their overall fitness and health. Thinking they are getting a certain amount of protein, come athletes and body builders plan workouts and food intake around what they think is in a particular protein supplement. According to a ConsumerLab.com study published June 11, 2013, “31% of Protein Powders and DrinksFlunk Tests of Quality.”
A few of the study’s conclusions:
- “a protein powder from a popular brand was missing 16 grams of protein per scoop — the majority of the protein it claimed to provide. Instead, it contained an extra 16 grams of carbohydrates (including an extra 3 grams of sugar)”
- “a powdered meal replacement shake was contaminated with 12.7 mcg of lead per serving”
